Assisi

About Assisi

Assisi is a small, ancient Umbrian town built on the terraced slopes of Monte Subasio. It is underlain by substantial Roman ruins, including a remarkably well-preserved villa discovered in 1997. But it is gentle St. Francis, born here in 1182, canonized as a saint in 1228 only two years after his death, who put Assisi on the map. Founder of the Franciscan order, he is revered by Catholics all over the world for his dedication to the poor. Many believe that miracles attributable to St. Francis still occur, even to this day. In addition to pilgrimage, Assisi’s magnificent churches, medieval alleyways and spectacular panoramas are bountiful reasons to visit.
