The hilltop stone village of Spello was, like Assisi to the north, on the Via Flaminia, the Roman road through Umbria. Begin your tour at Porta Consolare, one of three city gates from the time of Augustus. You’ll also see Porta di Venere (Venus) flanked by twin medieval towers and the Arch of Augustus. Of Spello’s two dozen medieval churches, you’ll see standouts: Cappella Tega and Santa Maria Maggiore with their magnificent 15th century frescoes; the Gothic Sant’ Andrea, dedicated to Saint Francis’ companion, Andrew; the Baroque gem San Lorenzo; and Santa Maria of Vallegloria and its monastery. Later enjoy a Winery visit to taste local Wines with bruschetta/Olive Oil snacks.
