From Roman times, canals (navigli) connected Milan to Lake Como, bringing prosperity to this inland region. In fact Leonardo da Vinci was responsible for some 15th century canal upgrades! Today little remains of this transport network – only Darsena harbor and two canals, Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. Where once family homes and warehouses stood, the emerald waterways are now lined with artists’ ateliers, galleries, trendy restaurants and unusual shops. The Navigli district is where Milanese come to see and be seen! Enjoy a photography-friendly canal/harbor walk, enlivened by insider commentary. End by visiting the 4th century Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, an impressive church with Byzantine elements.
