About Venice

Straddling 118 islands and connected by 400 arched bridges, timeless Venice is water-borne! Imagine a city without streets – no cars or trucks! Transport is by canal boats or on footpaths. Paintings of 18th century Venice resemble Venice today. The gondola-dotted water is the same mesmerizing blue; the buildings, with mingled European, Byzantine and Muslim bloodlines, overlook the same busy lagoon. Until the 15th century, this maritime republic dominated the Adriatic and the east, amassing untold wealth that paid for sumptuous palazzi and magnificent art from Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese. It became a center for glassworks, lace, music and revelry, a city of elegance and refinement. So it remains!
