A Good Introduction to Val d’Aosta

With its towers, arrow slits and ramparts, Fénis is the most famous castle in the Aosta Valley. Owned by the Challant family until 1716, today it contains an interesting Museum of Furniture. The town of Aosta was founded by the Romans in 25 BCE, a strategically sited town with ancient roads leading to France and Switzerland. Nowadays it is the terminus of the Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo tunnels. Surrounded by magnificent mountains, the city boasts intact prehistoric, Roman, medieval and Renaissance structures and infrastructure. Must-see sights include the city walls, Praetoria Gate, the Arch of Augustus, the Cathedral and Sant’ Orso’s cloisters.
