Stroll the narrow streets of the Old Town Bari, a pilgrimage destination for the cult of Saint Nicholas (yes, that St. Nick!) whose relics reside in the Basilica di San Nicola. Nearby are the Romanesque Cathedral of San Sabino and the formidable 12 th century fortress with three names: Hohenstaufen, Swabian Castle, or Castello Svevo. On Arco Basso, local women demonstrate how to make typical orecchiette (little ears pasta!).Visit Murattiano, Bari’s ‘new’ town laid out by Joachim Murat, Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Free time for lunch, then drive to Monopoli, on the ancient Via Traiana (Trajan’s Road). Tour its historic center, strong fortifications, 18 th century cathedral and imposing Castle of Charles V.
