Greek settlers built the town of Paestum, now one of the most important Archeological Sites in Southern Italy, around 600 BCE. Paestum’s Doric temples, dedicated to Hera, Athena and Poseidon, are magnificent stand-outs – largely intact! –as are the city walls, amphitheater and paved roads from antiquity. Furthermore, Paestum is a lost Eden, having been abandoned from the Middle Ages until the 18th century. It reemerged from obscurity at the same time as exploration brought to light Pompeii and Herculaneum. Despite heavy fighting nearby in WWII, the site miraculously emerged unscathed.
