Trani, a sleepy fishing port on the Adriatic, resembles a romantic movie set with its fading buildings, small cafés and colorful boats bobbing in the harbor. Admire its beautiful waterside cathedral, St. Nicholas the Pilgrim (different St. Nick) with frescoes dating from the Byzantine era. Journey into the countryside and stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant specializing in Pugliese cuisine. Later, visit the 13th century UNESCO-listed Castel del Monte, a unique octagonal castle with eight corner towers, depicted on the Italian one-cent Euro. Built by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, it was surely the inspiration for Umberto Eco’s Aedificium, the abbey in The Name of the Rose.
