Visit Italy’s oldest family business, the Marinelli Bell Foundry in Agnone (population 5200), which cast its first bronze bell in 1040 CE. Today 90% of Marinelli bells ring out from Roman Catholic churches in Europe and Asia, but a Marinelli bell can also be found at UN Headquarters in New York. On to Scapoli, renowned for the manufacture of bagpipes – zampogne – an ancient handmade instrument associated with shepherds and Christmas. Thousands of bagpipe players flock to Scapoli for its annual Zampone Festival. Visit the Zampogne Museum and listen to the instrument’s evocative tones. Finish with a delicious lunch of Molise specialties in a local trattoria.
