Time-travel where Romans walked! Drive southeast of Naples to Herculaneum, entombed in pyroclastic mud since Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. Once a retreat for the wealthy, Herculaneum has many well preserved buildings including Villa Papyri, where archaeologists discovered an intact library. Better known Pompeii suffered heavy damage when ash fall caused roofs to collapse. Subsequent surges of superheated gas and debris were the coup de grâce, annihilating the city in 25 hours. Both cities offer extraordinary windows into ancient Roman life. Finish the tour with a drive up Mount Vesuvius. Climb the last section with experienced alpine guides and enjoy a thrilling view over much of Campania.
