Travel by private car to Bevagna, a charming village not far from Assisi, for this renowned June pageant. Teams from Bevagna’s four ancient parishes (‘gaite’) vie in areas of medieval enterprise: market, crafts, gastronomy and archery. Wearing period costumes and using authentic 13th century techniques, participants enact a competition that is both magical and historically correct. Festival goers watch demonstrations such as coin minting, silk-making, stained glass, bell-making, paper making from rags, pottery, iron works, brick-making and more. Medieval days come alive with music, a bustling market scene, jesters, acrobats, an enthralling archery competition and taverns where each gaite serves up Middle Ages cuisine.
