In a comfortable vehicle, depart early for the hillside town of Assisi, enjoying the beautiful Umbrian countryside. The birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy’s patron saints, Assisi is an historic, religious and artistic gem. Marvel at the soaring Basilica of San Francesco, begun right after Francis’ canonization. The upper church features magnificent wall and ceiling frescoes painted by the school of Giotto; the lower church contains St. Francis’ tomb. In the Umbrian/Romanesque Cathedral of Assisi, both St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized. Stroll around the cobblestoned old town with its surviving Roman walls, viewing medieval houses and cherished small churches that hosted centuries of pilgrims.
