Even before the Diaspora there were Jews in Rome – Maccabees who settled there after seeking Rome’s intervention against King Antiochus. The Jewish community, free men and ransomed slaves, put down roots in Trastevere. However in 1555, Pope Paul IV imposed severe restrictions and humiliations on the community, including forced residence in a crowded and miserable ghetto that persisted until 1870. This tour offers a comprehensive look at today’s vibrant community, thriving despite a history of Inquisitions, persecutions and concentration camps. Discover it in the labyrinths and squares of Trastevere, the Jewish Ghetto and synagogue, and Tiber Island, where Roman ruins emerge unexpectedly between galleries and kosher restaurants.
