Begin at the Roman Forum, discovered under the Piazza della Comune. Descend through San Nicolò’s crypt to view Roman-era ornaments, inscriptions, a cistern, a magistrate podium and a small temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux. On to the Baroque Palazzo Vallemani, now an art gallery displaying frescoes and paintings from noted Umbrian artists, plus one attributed to Giotto. Look up too – the ceilings are magnificent! Continue uphill to the imposing fortress of Rocca Maggiore, built to defend Assisi in 1316, and commanding spectacular views in every direction. Then wander through this authentic, well preserved medieval castle, complete with battlements, possibly the best one you will ever see.
