Fascism and Communism, and the cruel repression that ensued

See traces of the dark days of WWII in and around Trieste. Drive to Gonars concentration camp, set up in 1942 for the internment of thousands of Slovenes and Croats from Italian-occupied Yugoslavia. Internees faced starvation, torture and death until Gonars was disbanded after Italian armistice in 1943. Transfer to Foiba of Basovizza, where in May 1945 Tito’s communist partisans retaliated, ruthlessly executing thousands and throwing them into shafts. Finish at Risiera di San Sabba, the Nazi concentration camp established after 1943. The Germans used it for the brutal suppression and murder of political opponents, and as a transit station for Jews who were sent north to Auschwitz.
