In-depth Tour of the Sacred Shroud (Cathedral of St John the Baptist) and the Palazzo Carignano

Palazzo Carignano is one of the most original Baroque palaces in Europe. Built in 1679 for the Carignano branch of the royal House of Savoy, it was the 1829 birthplace of Italy’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele. In 1861, the building became Italy’s first parliament and today houses the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento, telling the story of Italian unification. Torino’s most famous site is the magnificent Renaissance-era Duomo San Giovanni with its sacred relic, the Shroud of Turin. Purportedly the funerary shroud of Jesus, ingrained with the imprints of a face and wounds, it is widely venerated and viewed as miraculous.
