Oristano, on Sardinia’s western coast, produces a delicious DOC-designated Vernaccia that is distinct from Tuscan and southern Italian Vernaccias. Bottarga, the ‘caviar of the south’, is a traditional delicacy produced from the roe of flathead mullet in the Cabras and Sinis regions. You’ll discover these gourmet items at the establishments of two local producers, enjoying tastings and a light lunch. Vernaccia was introduced to Sardinia by the Phoenicians, so you’ll complete your day visiting the remarkable 1200 BCE ruins of Tharros, mentioned by Ptolemy and once an important settlement in Sardinia. Now an open air museum, Tharros contains a Tophet (Phoenician sanctuary), thermae (communal baths) and temple foundations.
*NOTE: Drinking large quantities of Vernaccia di Oristano is rumored to ward off malaria!
