Prepare for grandeur! Drive a spectacular 90 km (56 miles) on the western section of the east-west Great Dolomites Road, built in 1909. Expansive panoramas begin as you follow the canyon of the Ega River to Lake Carezza, with its crystalline multi-colored waters. Stroll around the lake, jaw dropped, filling your memory card. At Costalunga Pass, see the Grand Hotel Carezza, host to past luminaries such as Winston Churchill and Agatha Christie. In the Fassa Valley, pass charming towns on your way to the austere massif of the Sella Group. 27 switchbacks further on, reach Pordoi Pass at an altitude of 2,239 meters (7350 feet) where you will ride a cable car to Sass Pordoi at 2950 meters (9700 feet). On to Sella Pass, and marvel … these are two of the seven mountain passes of the Dolomite single-day bike marathon! In the Gardena Valley, a break for lunch in rustic Ortisei. Return (reluctantly) to Bolzano.
*NOTE: Lunch is not included. Cable car operates from late May until mid-October, and from Christmas to Easter. Recommend a 9 am departure from Bolzano
