Enjoy your scenic drive through hilly countryside to the mountaintop town of San Marino, capital of this tiny republic. Begin your walking tour in the old town, viewing the medieval Porta San Francesco, the Piazza Titano, the Cava dei Balestrieri (‘Crossbowmen Quarry’ – the medieval-costumed crossbow corps is still a nominal part of the army!), Piazza della Libertà whose town hall doubles as the country’s government assembly – their 16th century Latin constitution is still in place – and the Basilica di San Marino. Climb past medieval stone walls to the top of the hill to view Guaita, the first fortress-tower, and admire the breathtaking views over the Apennines and the Adriatic.
