Indulge your imperial nostalgia with a tour of the Hapsburg dynasty’s summer palace, situated on a promontory northwest of Trieste. Archduke Maximilian completed this romantic retreat in 1860 and enjoyed it for four years with his wife, Carlotta of Belgium. In 1864 Maximilian left to become Emperor of Mexico where he was assassinated in 1867. Today Miramare, with its wistful history, is one of the most visited castles in Italy. It contains mostly original furnishings from the 1860s, including an Art Deco apartment that mimic cabins on a frigate that Maximilian commanded in the 1850s. Don’t miss Carlotta’s music room, the throne room and the beautiful seaside gardens.
