Trieste Jewish History Private Tour

Trieste, Province of Trieste, Italy
TridAdvisor, Certificate of Excellence Image

Trieste became, for a time, the “Door of Zion” for Jews escaping Nazi oppression

Established in the 13th century, Trieste’s Jewish community flourished under the Hapsburgs’ enlightened rule. Discover Jewish history in the former ghetto where the new merchant class built palazzi where once hovels stood. Visit the Carlo and Vera Wagner Museum with its Holocaust memorial and extensive collection of Judaica. The Jewish Agency was headquartered here in the 1930s, helping desperate European Jews flee by ship for Palestine and the Americas. On to the Antique Bookshop, still selling rare volumes, owned until 1958 by famous Jewish author Umberto Saba. Lastly experience the solemnity of the Great Synagogue, completed in 1912 to reflect modern Judaism. Vandalized by Fascists, it was restored and reconsecrated after WWII.

  • Expert Local Private Guide
  • Private car pick-up/drop off at your accommodations, with walking tour through the ghetto
