Agrigento is history written in stone. View the breathtaking Valley of Temples from the Renaissance Church of San Calogero. Stroll Via Atenea, lined with 18th and 19th century palazzos, to the medieval Abbey Church and Convent of Santo Spirito. Sweeten your visit with fresh macaroons baked by the nuns. Agrigento’s Duomo is an 11th century Arab-Norman masterpiece.
Descend the ridge to the Valley of the Temples, an unparalleled archeological site covering 1000 years, still only partially excavated. Most intact are the 5th century BCE temples of Juno Lacinia and Concordia, the latter rivaling the Parthenon. Other tantalizing ruins speak of Magna Graecia, Carthage, Rome and early Christianity.
*Lunch is not included. Treats in the Convent of Santo Spirito are not included. Agrigento is a long way from other tourist destinations. Without private transportation, we recommend spending the night there
